Planning the perfect bedroom

luxury bedroom furniture and walk in wardrobes

Along with the kitchen, the bedroom is one of the rooms in which we spend most of our time – generally eight hours a night! It’s a place to relax, unwind and have a peaceful night’s sleep.

But the bedroom also has practical considerations as it is one of the most valuable storage areas in the house.

Lime Black has put together five tips for planning the perfect bedroom to help you achieve a balance between style and practicality.

  1. Work out how you will use your bedroom

Obviously you will sleep in your bedroom but you may also want to watch TV, listen to music, read or work there. Think about how you will incorporate items such as a TV, a radio and books into the bedroom along with the furniture. For instance, having a bed with built-in underside storage can save vital space, and you may also want to make room for bedside cabinets. If you like the luxury of walk-in wardrobes then of course you will need to think about allocating space for this.

  1. Assess your options

If you’re moving house then take the bedrooms into account when viewing properties. There is no point getting a bedroom that’s too small for the amount of furniture and storage space that you need. It may be that you already have a bed that you want to take to your new bedroom - in that case can the room support the bed without it needing to rest up against a wall? Because having one side of the bed blocked off will most likely upset whoever has that side.

  1. Draw a floor plan of your bedroom

You will probably have an idea of how you would like you bedroom to look. The beauty of a floor plan is that you can measure up all of your furniture and then see whether it fits in your bedroom. No guessing, just precise measurement! A floor plan also allows you to experiment with different layouts. You can even cut out bits of paper to represent the size and shapes of your furniture and move them around until you are satisfied.

  1. Allow space to move

When planning your bedroom you need to think about how you will move around and access your wardrobes, drawers and cupboards.  Allow at least 40cm of space around each of your cabinet drawers and 70cm around your wardrobe doors. That way getting at your clothes and other possessions won’t restrict your movement around the room.
